Sayonara, Germany! France Takes the Lead in EU Asylum Applications

EU Asylum Applications no Longer Dominated by Germany

Hello there! To cut the long story short, Germany's throne as the king of asylum applications in the EU has been snatched, at least for now. The erstwhile reigning champ has slipped to third place in the first quarter of 2022, according to a tidbit from the "Welt am Sonntag," quoting figures from the European Union's Asylum Agency (EUAA) that ain't out in the open yet.

France flat out wins the quarter with an impressive 40,871 asylum applications, kicking off the year on a chilly note. Germany follows France with 37,387 applications, but the cut here is a whopping 41% compared to the previous year. The countries taking the least queries were Hungary with a measly 22 and Slovakia with 37.

Wondering who's been filling up these applications? Most of 'em came from Venezuela, Afghanistan, and Syria. The numbers show a 44% increase in asylum applications from Venezuelans in the first quarter of 2022. Interestingly, applications from Ukrainians, Chinese, and Indians also saw a significant rise, while the number of Syrians, Colombians, and Turks took a nose-dive.

A hefty 50% of all Syrian asylum applications within the EU, Switzerland, and Norway were lodged in Germany. In fact, one-fourth of all applications in Germany came from Syrians, and they were followed closely by Afghans and Turks. But guess who's swiping left on the Germans these days? It's the French, who turned out to be the dream destination for Ukrainians.

Meanwhile, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DLT) has let loose some hot air about banning migrants from the war and crisis regions. The association's chief, Achim Brötel, went as far as questioning whether the countries torn apart by wars and chaos should even be accepted at all, advocating for border closures. Let's not forget that he's hoping the upcoming federal government to justify a more equitable distribution of refugees across the EU.

That's all, folks! Keep on keeping on.
