EU and Australia to Initiate Defense Collaboration Discussions

A fresh chapter has been penned in the EU-Australia relationship with the announcement of deliberations for a security and defense pact. "This day marks a new era in the bond between Europe and Oz," EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen declared at a tete-a-tete with Aussie PM Anthony Albanese, held on the outskirts of the G7 summit in Canada. "By joining forces on defense goods procurement," Albanese unveiled, "we're not only fortifying our industrial and technological ties, but also stepping up to meet the call of shared security challenges."

Albanese underlined his perspective that the safety of Europe and the Indo-Pacific are interconnected. Way back in May, he and von der Leyen had hinted at the prospect of a defense accord between the duo, with the EU head nodding to Australia as a premier strategic partner.

In March, the EU ventured into a defense beef-up plan, aiming for up to 800 billion EUR investments in defense over the upcoming decade. The "European Defense Preparedness 2030" roadmap envisions a 150 BN EUR invigoration pool for defense expenditure.

This investment pool will be accessible to countries that engage in a security and defense pact with Brussels, with seven such agreements already inked, featuring the UK and Norway. A drive to finalize another pact with Canada was expressed by EU Foreign Affairs Commissioner Kaja Kallas in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
