EU aid requested by Spain as wildfires claim lives of three and displace thousands
Europe Aids Spain in Battling Devastating Wildfires
Spain is currently grappling with a series of wildfires fueled by extreme temperatures and strong winds, with the fires in the Ourense province, Galicia, posing a significant challenge for firefighters. The fires in the region, specifically in the town of Chandrexa de Queixa, have caused extensive damage, burning over 11,500 hectares of land.
The EU assistance mechanism, such as the one currently aiding Spain, operates through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. When a member country faces a disaster beyond its capacity, it requests help via the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC). This activation enables other EU countries and participating states to offer specialized aid, including personnel, firefighting aircraft, helicopters, and equipment.
In Spain's wildfire crisis, the EU swiftly deployed rescEU resources, a strategically maintained reserve of firefighting planes and helicopters funded by the EU and stationed across member states. For the first time for forest fires, Spain activated the Mechanism and received two rescEU firefighting planes from France. Additional aircraft and prepositioned firefighters from various countries were also mobilized to support firefighting efforts.
The Copernicus Emergency Management Service complements this by providing geospatial data to map affected areas and assist in planning relief operations. This integration ensures targeted and efficient responses to disasters.
More than 8,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in Spain's León and Zamora provinces. Seven people were taken to the hospital on Wednesday, and a person fighting the fire in Castile and León was killed on Thursday, bringing the death toll to three.
Spain is ready to seek additional help, including extra firefighters, if needed. The fires in Spain are part of a larger issue, as fires have also occurred elsewhere in Europe, notably in France and Portugal. No new information about fires in France or Portugal was provided in the current paragraph.
The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated multiple times during the 2025 fire season across countries such as Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Albania, showing an integrated and scalable approach. This system of rapid mobilization of European resources beyond national limits during emergencies is on display in Spain's current wildfire battle.
