EU Aid Controversy in Ahrtal Flood Disaster: Was Assistance Sought from the EU? - Controversy: No EU Emergency Aid Requested
In the summer of 2021, Rhineland-Palatinate, a state in western Germany, was hit by an unprecedented natural disaster. The Ahr Valley experienced a colossal tidal wave on July 14-15, causing widespread destruction and claiming 136 lives officially, with one person still missing.
During the flood, Rhineland-Palatinate faced a shortage of essential resources, including helicopters, rescue winches, pumps, and water treatment facilities. Despite this, no EU aid was requested from Germany, even though the European Union (EU) has a well-equipped aid program for disasters, available to any country in the world through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
The EU holds extensive aid supplies ready for crises, but they were not requested in the case of the Ahr Valley flood. Belgium, however, did activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in 2021, receiving helicopters and rescue teams in response. Austria and Italy also offered flood rescue teams, with 120 firefighters from Lower Austria arriving in Belgium on July 15 and 16, 2021. France sent a helicopter and a flood rescue team to Belgium as well.
Helicopters were available during the flood, such as the ADAC rescue helicopter and the Flying Rescue unit from the Nurburgring. The police helicopter in Rhineland-Palatinate flew through the Ahr Valley three times that night, documenting the disaster.
The state government of Rhineland-Palatinate has refused to acknowledge any mistakes or being overwhelmed in the flood night and in managing the catastrophe afterwards. Joachim Streit, a European Parliament member of the Free Voters, questions why Rhineland-Palatinate did not request the European emergency mechanism during the flood.
