Ethiopia's teleSign Platform Revolutionizes Access to Digital Government Services

Ethiopia has launched a new digital platform called teleSign, designed to simplify access to government services. Developed by Ethio telecom in partnership with key ministries, the system allows citizens to handle official tasks online—anytime and from anywhere. Processing times that once took days or weeks can now be completed in minutes.

The platform was introduced through a collaboration between Ethio telecom, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and the Federal Documents Authentication and Registration Service (DARS). It offers secure digital identity checks, legally binding electronic signatures, and fully digitised government workflows. Citizens no longer need to visit offices in person, even for complex procedures like granting or revoking Power of Attorney (PoA).

teleSign uses AI-powered video identification and liveness detection to verify users remotely. This ensures trusted authentication without physical paperwork. The system also integrates digital payments via telebirr, making transactions smoother. For Ethiopians abroad, the platform removes geographical barriers to embassy and consular services. It also helps government institutions by cutting bureaucracy, speeding up processes, and improving service delivery. The initiative supports Ethiopia's broader push toward a fully digital government ecosystem. No official details have been released about the number of ministries involved or additional regulations beyond Proclamation 1072, which governs digital signatures.

teleSign marks a significant step in Ethiopia's digital transformation by reducing paperwork and increasing accessibility. The platform's secure authentication, digital signatures, and payment integration aim to streamline government interactions for citizens at home and overseas. Its long-term impact will depend on wider adoption across public institutions.
