Estonian Clubs Demand UEFA Meeting to Challenge Russian Club Involvement
Thirteen Estonian football clubs have demanded an extraordinary general meeting of the Estonian Football Association (EJL) to address the ongoing situation with Russian clubs within UEFA. The clubs, led by Paide Linnameeskond's president Veiko Veskimae, find UEFA's current actions immoral and unjust, and they want to challenge the ethical foundation of the sport.
The clubs have submitted a request to the EJL board, as per the association's statutes, requiring at least one-tenth of members to call for such a meeting. They hope that a collective statement by the EJL secretariat will foster cooperation between the general meeting and the board to protect Ukraine's interests within UEFA.
The clubs sent an appeal to the EJL on Aug. 15, asking about planned actions regarding Russian clubs, but received no response. They now demand that UEFA stop payments to Russian clubs and ensure payments to Ukrainian clubs. The clubs want to expel the Russian Football Union from UEFA and suspend solidarity-based payments to Russian football clubs as a response to political and sports-related concerns.
