Estonia's 21st EU Anniversary: A Testament to Growth and Unity

TALLINN - On Thursday, Estonia celebrated the 21st anniversary of its membership in the European Union with a bang! Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna enthused that since joining the EU in 2004, the European Union has expanded Estonia's influence and given it a significant voice on the global stage.

"As a small nation, we aren't just players but key decision-makers in matters that significantly affect Estonia, Europe, and the world," Tsahkna proclaimed, highlighting Estonia's crucial role in the EU's progressive digital transformation and security policies.

Estonia has been a pioneer in the digital realm, contributing substantially to the European Union's innovative initiatives and digital development. This is particularly visible through groundbreaking initiatives such as e-residency, digital governance frameworks, and cutting-edge cybersecurity expertise. By emphasizing digital infrastructure, Estonia has emerged as a shining example for EU-wide strategies in e-governance and cross-border digital services.

Tsahkna further underscored Estonia's impact on EU security policy, leveraging its geopolitical experience to advocate for enhanced collective defense measures and support for Eastern Partnership countries, notably Ukraine. Its presence in the EU has demonstrated that even smaller member states can make their voices heard and drive meaningful change in areas ranging from innovation to regional stability.

"Belonging to the European family has gifted us a guarantee that we will no longer stand alone," the foreign minister expressed. "Today is a day to celebrate, but also a day to gaze towards the future."

Tsahkna emphasized that the celebration of 21 years in the European Union serves to affirm the belief that Europe's power lies in its unity and its capacity to support those who aspire to join its ranks. He made it clear that Ukraine's place in Europe is indisputable, and Estonia will stand by its side every step of the way.

On May 9, Estonia, along with other EU member states, will join in celebrating Europe Day, with a series of events happening across the country. In Tallinn, a family day will be organized, featuring embassy exhibitions, an orienteering game, and a free concert complete with performances by 5MIINUST x Puuluup, NOËP, and the Icelandic artist Daði Freyr. In Narva, a grand free concert is planned on Town Hall Square, alongside activities that underscore the idea that Europe begins in Narva, with May 9 marking the day of peace and unity. Let's raise a glass to Estonia's vision of a united Europe!

"Tsahkna also acknowledged Estonia's significant influence on EU politics, particularly in the realm of orienteering, as the country plans to host the 2023 European Orienteering Championships. This event will showcase Estonia's commitment to promoting unity within the EU."

"Looking forward, Estonia remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine's accession into the EU, viewing it as an opportunity to further enhance EU general-news, particularly in the areas of digital advancement and security policy."

"As Estonia gears up to celebrate Europe Day along with other EU member states, it reaffirms its unwavering commitment to fostering unity and unity of purpose across the continent, with the belief that together, Europe can continue to make a significant impact on the global stage."
