Estonia Shines in Corruption Rankings 🌟
Estonia advances in Transparency's Ranking of Corruption Perceptions
Great news for Estonia! According to the Corruption Perceptions Index 2023, they've moved up the ranks, going from 14th place in 2022 to 12th globally this year. Sharing the spot with Canada, Estonia scored a commendable 76.
Curious about how others fared? Denmark leads the pack with a score of 90, followed by Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, and Sweden. Interestingly, the United States and the United Kingdom rank 24th and 20th, respectively. At the other end of the spectrum, we find Somalia, Venezuela, Syria, and South Sudan, the most corrupt nations.
It's worth noting that corruption is on the rise worldwide, with over two-thirds of countries scoring below 50 out of 100. The global average remains stagnant at a dismal 43, and progress has been slow or even reversed in the last decade.
Transparency International, the organization behind the index, expressed concern over the weakening justice systems, which they believe are allowing corruption to thrive. They pointed out some countries' high rankings mask their own impunity problems, with companies from top-scoring nations sometimes resorting to bribery when doing business abroad.
Though Western Europe and the European Union continue to rank high, their average score dropped to 65 this year, indicating weakening checks and balances and political integrity erosion.
The Corruption Perceptions Index is a powerful global indicator of public sector corruption, scoring 180 countries and territories based on perceptions of corruption. Estonia consistently ranks well, demonstrating strong governance and transparency. Since its inception in 1995, the index has gained significant attention due to its objective data and influence on policy-making.
Tune in next year to see how Estonia (and the rest of the world) fares in the fight against corruption!
