Hesson's extensive coaching portfolio includes stints with New Zealand, Kenya, and IPL franchises like Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Currently, he serves as the head coach for the defending champions Islamabad United in the PSL.
The appointment of Hesson comes after a rigorous search following the departure of Pakistan's previous white-ball coach, Gary Kirsten, and Test coach Jason Gillespie, who resigned within a span of two months back in April. Their departures marked a tumultuous phase for Pakistan cricket, which also saw allegations of undermining and financial disputes.
Aaqib Javed stepped in as the interim coach during this challenging time, and now, Hesson prepares to step up to the plate. Among the allegations leveled against Javed by Gillespie were claims of being a "clown" for his behind-the-scenes antics, and accusations of financial issues with the PCB. The board, however, countered these claims stating that Gillespie breached his contract by leaving without serving the mandatory notice period.
Pakistan's white-ball performance over the past few months has not been impressive. They have managed just one win in their last eight One Day Internationals and T20Is. Their poor form led to an early exit from the T20 World Cup in 2024 and failure to reach the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
