Join us on June 14th for the birthday celebration of King Charles III in London. Wondering what this "Trooping the Colour" event entails? Here's a rundown on the ceremony, including its start time and the number of participants.

What Does the "Trooping the Colour" Signify?

Taking place annually in the English capital, the monarch's birthday celebration typically happens on the first Saturday in June. The occurrence is marked by a grand parade called "Trooping the Colour". Expected this year are hundreds of soldiers, thousands of spectators lining the streets, and hundreds of thousands watching on television.

tracing back to the 17th century, according to the British Army's official website. During the reign of Charles II (1660-1685), it's believed the march was first performed. The ceremony officially transformed into a birthday parade in 1748. After the coronation of George III in 1760, the event turned on an annual celebration.

What Happens During the Celebrations for King Charles III?

More than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians are involved in a "magnificent display of military precision, horsemanship, and music" each year, as per palace officials. The usual route stretches from Buckingham Palace along The Mall to the parade ground, Horse Guards Parade.

This year, the 7th Company of the Coldstream Guards will march, encompassing 1,350 soldiers from the Household Division and the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, as well as 300 musicians. Adding 250 soldiers from the Foot Guards who will flank the route along The Mall.

King Charles III will be greeted with a salute upon arrival at the parade ground before inspecting his troops. A performance by the military bands will follow, and the regimental flag will be carried through the ranks. After marching past the king, the soldiers will ride back towards Buckingham Palace. They will then partake in another salute, prior to retiring to their barracks, while King Charles III, along with Queen Camilla, steps out on the balcony to watch a flypast by the Royal Air Force.

To ensure everything goes smoothly, the parade is staged thrice. These include the “Major General’s Review” and the “Colonel’s Review” on the two preceding Saturdays before the parade for the king.

When Will It Begin this Year?

Under a cloudy forecast for June 14th, the parade is set to start around 10:30 AM British time and end around 12:25 PM. Around 1:00 PM, the aircraft of the Royal Air Force are expected to fly over the palace. The British BBC will telecast the complete event on TV in the UK.

A parade without King Charles III would be unimaginable. With his recent cancer treatment, it is predicted that the monarch will ride in a gilded carriage with Queen Camilla by his side. Instead, Princess Anne might accompany "Trooping the Colour" on horseback, making her first public appearance on horseback since her accident last year.

Additionally, Princess Kate, accompanied by her husband, heir apparent Prince William, along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, is expected to participate in the festivities. After her recent cancer diagnosis and subsequent recovery, Kate has gradually resumed her public engagements in recent months.
