Essen's New Comprehensive School Altenessen-Süd Approved for August 2026
Essen's local education authority will decide on September 24, 2025, whether to establish the new comprehensive school Altenessen-Süd. If approved, it will open in August 2026 at Karolingerstraße 93, meeting growing demand for classroom places in grade 5.
The new school will initially operate with four classes, accommodating 116 students per grade, and will use the entire ground floor and first floor of house 7 at the interim location. Specialized rooms will be shared with the vocational college in the Bildungspark and other institutions. The school conference will determine the final name, with 'Comprehensive School in the Park' currently favored.
Additional material costs totaling 407,106 euros will be considered for IT, telecommunications, and administrative personnel. The equipment of learning and specialized rooms, and administrative areas, will be funded from the existing budget of the school department. Upon moving into the new building, the school will operate with six classes in secondary school I.
