Essen's Iconic Pedestrian Bridge Over Ruhr Set for €774,000 Renovation
Essen's iconic pedestrian bridge over the Ruhr, connecting Kupferdreh and Heisingen, is set for a comprehensive €774,000 renovation. The bridge, once a railway bridge, has been solely dedicated to foot and bike traffic since 1984 and is a vital part of the path around Baldeneysee.
The renovation aims to preserve the bridge's functionality and safety. The bidding process for the project is about to commence. A recent main inspection in September and October 2023 revealed that the wooden construction has further deteriorated, necessitating comprehensive renewal and replacement with other materials in some parts.
The renovation will also address the bridge's design. Protrusions in the shipping canal area will be removed, and the number of viewing platforms will be reduced. The new platforms will be 1.30 meters wide, matching the width of the underlying steel construction. Additionally, the railing will be raised to 1.30 meters to enhance safety for bike paths.
The renovation of Essen's pedestrian bridge is a significant investment in maintaining a crucial link between Kupferdreh and Heisingen. The project aims to ensure the bridge's longevity and safety, while also improving its design and functionality.
