Essen is drawing in skillful individuals - originally, the athlete was slated for the opposing team
In the heart of the city, Essen's ice hockey scene is currently undergoing a significant transformation. The Eagles Essen-West, a newly formed regional league team, are leading this rebuilding phase, focusing on developing young talent in the Regionalliga, a league below the professional tiers.
The team's roster, established in 2025 under Head Coach Mikhail Nemirovsky, is youthful and relatively small, with only four nationalities and very few players compared to other teams. One of the young stars on the team is 19-year-old Luis Bauer, a local talent from Essen who has been trained in the Moskitos' youth system for the past three and a half years.
Bauer joined the Moskitos from Krefeld EV during the 2021/22 season, initially for the U17. Last season, he was the Moskitos' top scorer and the league's second-best scorer. His impressive performance caught the attention of Frank Gentges, the Ice Aliens' coach and former Moskitos coach, who expressed trust in Bauer's ability to make the leap from DNL3 to the regional league.
Initially, Bauer was supposed to play for a direct competitor, the Ratingen Ice Aliens. However, due to the development license for the Moskitos no longer being valid due to Essen's admission to the NRW regional league, Bauer was integrated into the Eagles Essen-West regional league squad. The regional league clubs initially agreed that Essen would not sign players from league competitors, but this rule does not apply to Bauer due to his binding contract with the Moskitos and the new club. Ratingen could only loan Bauer to Essen for senior-level playing experience, and the transfer agreement does not apply in this case.
The Eagles Essen-West have high hopes for Bauer, as evidenced by his assignment of the number 20 jersey. In 63 DNL3 games over two years, Bauer scored a total of 143 points (53 goals/90 assists). Lennart Otten and Luis Bauer are under contract as forwards for the Eagles Essen-West in the new season, while René Behrens is under contract as a defense player.
The integration of Bauer into the Eagles Essen-West team reflects a local investment in nurturing youth players within a newly founded team environment. Thomas Böttcher, the team's management, has stated that the Eagles Essen-West want to integrate homegrown talent and focus on young players.
However, the city faced a setback when it was denied entry to the Oberliga, a higher, semi-professional tier above the Regionalliga. This denial may impact ambitions for climbing the league system. Nevertheless, the team's focus on developing local talent and continued community engagement could eventually restore or advance the city's competitive standing in German ice hockey.
The Eagles Essen-West team's first game of the season is yet to be played, indicating the season or their competitive participation is just beginning or in early stages. With Bauer and other young talents on the team, there is cautious optimism for the future of ice hockey in Essen.
