Essen Boosts Volunteer Involvement With Revamped Funding and New Micro-Grant Programme
Essen's city council has approved measures to boost local volunteering. Key changes include a revamped funding scheme and a new micro-grant programme.
The 'Förderfonds Bürgerliches Engagement', active since 2013, will adapt from 1. January 2026 to better fit evolving volunteering structures. It has annually supported non-profits with 80,000 euros.
Introducing in 2026 is the 'Mission Volunteering' micro-grant programme, with an annual budget of 20,000 euros. Funds can be used for materials, actions, training, and equipment. Up to six projects will be funded yearly, with two receiving up to 5,000 euros and four up to 2,500 euros each.
Applications for the 'Förderfonds' can be submitted twice yearly, with a maximum of three consecutive years of funding. The new 'Mission Volunteering' programme encourages innovative projects, supporting Essen's recognition culture.
