ESPN's Shannon Sharpe Parts Ways Following Settlement of Physical Altercation Claim
Shannon Sharpe, a former NFL star and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has left ESPN after settling a legal case involving allegations of sexual assault.
The lawsuit, filed by a woman using the name "Jane Doe," claimed that Sharpe violently sexually assaulted her multiple times, with the incidents reportedly occurring in October 2024 and again in January 2025 in Las Vegas.
However, Sharpe has maintained his innocence throughout the case, claiming that their interactions were consensual. His lawyer, Lanny J. Davis, stated that the woman was attempting to blackmail Sharpe.
After the lawsuit became public, Sharpe temporarily stepped away from ESPN to be with his family and deal with the false and harmful claims. He returned to the network when the NFL preseason started, having previously joined the "First Take" show in August 2023 as a regular.
Following the settlement, which was announced in July 2025, ESPN officially cut ties with Sharpe, ending their professional relationship. The terms of the settlement were not publicly disclosed.
ESPN supported Sharpe's decision to step away and did not provide any further comment, including after the case was settled on July 18. Sharpe talked about his departure from ESPN on his podcast Nightcap with Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson.
Following his retirement from the NFL in 2003 as the top tight end in NFL history in terms of catches, yards, and touchdowns, Sharpe entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. He won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and one more with the Baltimore Ravens.
After retiring, Sharpe became a TV personality and now hosts a popular podcast called "Club Shay Shay." His brother, Sterling Sharpe, is being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this Saturday. Despite the recent events, Sharpe's career and contributions to the sport of football continue to be celebrated.
