World Council of Churches Ecumenical Accompaniment Program Evacuated Amid Rising Tensions
The World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) was evacuated on June 16-17, leaving a potential gap in the documentation and reporting of incidents of violence against Palestinians.
The EAPPI, which operates in four locations—Jordan Valley, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and South Hebron Hills—had formed great friendships with the local Palestinians, providing a crucial source of support and companionship. During their short placement, the accompaniers filed 450 incident reports, 295 of which were referred for immediate follow-up and assistance.
These reports, considered important enough for referral by multiple international organizations, included accounts of physical violence against Palestinians. The escalating violence, which saw an increase before the evacuation, was witnessed and possibly documented by the EAPPI.
The EAPPI's work in documenting and reporting incidents of violence was recognized and utilized by multiple international organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as Israeli, Palestinian, international, and United Nations organizations. The referred incident reports were addressed promptly, securing assistance for the affected Palestinians.
One accompanier, while working in Jordan Valley, left in tears, expressing the need for their presence. The local Palestinians needed the EAPPI, as their work provided crucial information for follow-up and immediate assistance.
The EAPPI is managed by the organization that oversees the program, with the leaders of the organization often serving as coordinators, including staff members from the World Council of Churches Secretariat. Despite the evacuation, the EAPPI's impact and legacy continue to resonate, leaving a void that may take time to fill.
