Let's get straight to it!

Baden-Württemberg's revving up to establish a brand-new detention center smack dab near the state's Stuttgart airport. The German Press Agency (dpa) confirmed the news, following a report by the "Southwest Press."

The upcoming facility's size is estimated to be of similar scope to the detention center in Pforzheim, currently expanding from 51 to 80 spots. It's projected to be operational by spring 2027. By autumn of this year, at least 68 spots will be available.

Baden-Württemberg's Binding EU Rules

Launched initially with an additional 15 spots, this new center emerges due to the European Union's (EU) updated asylum system regulations by July 2026.

Justice Minister Marion Gentges (CDU) justified this move amid increased deportation efforts by the federal government and the GEAS reform package implementation, necessitating expanded detention capacity for deportees. Siegfried Lorek, Migration State Secretary, also hinted at a new facility near the Stuttgart airport.

Airport as an External Border

GEAS reform allows some asylum seekers to undergo asylum procedures at the external borders, including airport transit areas. By June 2026, countries need to implement these procedures. A key component of GEAS is airport procedures, which speed up asylum assessments and remove cases in expedited return procedures directly at the airports' external borders.

As of April 30, approximately 23,700 individuals in Baden-Württemberg had enforceable deportation orders, although they couldn't be deported to countries like Syria due to current restrictions. By May 31, around 1,580 people were deported from the southwest, increasing from the previous year's 1,130 by the same date.
