Escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia result in forced displacement of approximately 130,000 Thai civilians due to border clashes.
The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, centred around disputed temple sites like Preah Vihear, has taken a turn for the worse following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire announced on July 28, 2025. The clashes, which resumed within hours, involve artillery, airstrikes, and have resulted in significant casualties and displacement of civilians.
Thai military alleges the use of BM-21 rocket systems and heavy field artillery by Cambodian forces, while Cambodia accuses Thai forces of illegal incursions and detentions. These accusations have deep roots in a 1907 colonial-era border dispute, nationalist politics, and personal rivalries within both countries' ruling dynasties.
International pressure is mounting to enforce a decisive ceasefire and open negotiations towards de-escalation. Malaysia, the United States, and China have brokered a ceasefire, but it has thus far failed to hold. The U.N. Security Council has convened an emergency meeting in New York to address the escalation and consider mediation.

The conflict has uprooted over 130,000 civilians from their homes in Thailand, and travel advisories have been issued by multiple countries, including the U.K. Foreign Office. In Cambodia, around 1,500 families have been evacuated from frontline areas.
The situation remains precarious due to ongoing accusations and military provocations on both sides. Experts suggest that strong leadership, robust external monitoring, and restraining nationalist-driven domestic political manipulation are necessary conditions for a durable ceasefire and eventual resolution. However, the immediate outlook is uncertain.
On the second day of intensified fighting, 15 deaths were reported in Thailand, including 14 civilians and one soldier, and 46 injuries. In Cambodia, one civilian death and five injuries were reported.
The confrontation revives longstanding tensions rooted in colonial-era demarcation issues, particularly disputes over cultural sites like Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom temples. ASEAN chair Malaysia, the U.S., China, and the U.N. have urged immediate de-escalation and civilian protection.
