Escalating Tensions: Behind-the-Scenes Struggle Within the White House as They Venture to Prevent India and Pakistan from the Precipice of Military Conflict

Former Sec of State Mike Pompeo joins our website Live to chat about President Donald Trump's announcement that India and Pakistan had agreed to an immediate ceasefire, ending escalating tensions between the two nuclear nations.

As White House officials fretted over the tense standoff between Pakistan and India, it was decided Friday morning to have Vice President JD Vance call Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Just 24 hours before Trump announced on social media Saturday morning that a ceasefire was in effect, key US officials scrambled to prevent escalation. They feared the situation could spin out of control, with both sides refusing to consider de-escalation options following Pakistan's counterattacks on Indian military sites.

Indian missile strikes against Pakistan were the latest chapter in the ongoing conflict, triggered by a deadly terrorist attack for which India blamed Pakistan.

As tensions escalated, US officials initiated diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation. In a noon call with Modi, Vance made it clear that the US feared dramatic escalation and urged de-escalation options. While Modi listened, he did not explicitly indicate openness to the proposed measures.

Vance's call to Modi took place less than a month after he met with the Indian leader in New Delhi to discuss trade talks. From then on, US officials continued to work the phones with their counterparts in India and Pakistan throughout the night to help reestablish communications and facilitate a ceasefire.

President Trump announced the ceasefire on Truth Social just before 8 a.m. on Saturday, stating, "After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE."

House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Lisa McClain praised Trump, referring to him as "The Peace President."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted in a statement that he and Vance had engaged with officials from both countries.

"Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik," Rubio said in the statement.

Vance posted on Twitter, "Great work from the President's team, especially Secretary Rubio. And my gratitude to the leaders of India and Pakistan for their hard work and willingness to engage in this ceasefire."
