Escalating tension in Ukraine as Russia intensifies its summer military push

In the heart of Eastern Ukraine, the ongoing conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces continues to shape the region's landscape. As of late July 2025, the Russian offensive in key towns has shown a mixed picture of progress.

On the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces have prioritized offensive operations, making significant territorial gains of approximately 1,394 square kilometers. This persistent push westward from occupied areas suggests a determined effort to advance deeper into Donetsk Oblast.

Conversely, advances in the Kostiantynivka direction have been less successful and less prioritized. While there are indications of some offensive efforts, confirmed progress has been limited.

In the Kupiansk and Kharkiv Oblast, Russian forces have been conducting offensive operations northeast of Kharkiv City, targeting towns like Vovchansk and locations near the border with Belgorod Oblast. However, these operations have not resulted in confirmed advances recently.

Meanwhile, Russia has been sustaining indirect fire and drone bombardment across wider Eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces, in response, have been intensifying counterstrikes against Russian military-industrial bases and logistic hubs.

The frontline remains highly active and contested, but with uneven Russian advances focused more notably in the Pokrovsk sector. The fight for the key town of Pokrovsk, which has been a target for months, is particularly intense.

The town of Dobropilia has been under sustained attack by Russian drones, hitting multiple civilian targets. The threat from drones has quickly grown in Dobropilia in the last few days, causing locals to anxiously look up to the sky.

In a striking development, Russian troops are assaulting mostly on foot along the entire eastern front, according to Viktor Tregubov, a spokesman for the Khortytsia group of forces. The driver of a civilian van was killed by an FPV attack drone in Kostiantynivka, despite the explosive on the device not detonating.

The saturation of Russian drones in the skies above has likely made it impossible for even armored vehicles to safely extract the injured. Dmytro, the operator of a field hospital near Pokrovsk, has not received any patients yet.

As the conflict continues, the situation remains tense. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged the tough circumstances across the frontline. The loss of Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, and Kupiansk to Russian forces would create three separate crises for Kyiv, as these towns' fall would free up a significant number of Russian forces to push hard onto Kramatorsk and Sloviansk - the largest Donetsk towns still under Ukrainian control.

Amidst this heightened tension, US President Donald Trump has radically shortened his deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to make peace from 50 to up to 12 days. The enemy drones swirling incessantly above, and the evacuation of the wounded from the front lines is difficult, adding to the urgency for a resolution. Moscow's forces have made incremental gains over recent months, but the pace of their advance has accelerated, according to open-source mapping by DeepState. However, the ultimate outcome of this summer offensive remains uncertain.
