Raging Right Violence in Schools - A Mounting Crisis in Southwest Germany
Escalating use of force by law enforcement officers, even in educational institutions - Escalating right-wing aggression, reaching school grounds as well.
Unleashing verbal abuse at polling stations, savage beatings, and outright death threats, the southwest is witnessing a surge in right-wing violence, according to a local counseling center. 135 instances of right-wing, racist, or anti-Semitic aggression were recorded last year - marking a staggering increase of over a third compared to the previous year.
Physical injuries saw a harrowing rise of nearly 20%. Racism continues to be the most prevalent motivation for these deplorable acts. The number of unreported cases is more than substantial, Molly Hampson, a counselor, admitted.
Schools: A Toxic Battlefield
In the dismal tally of 168 victims, women and girls collectively accounted for nearly a third. Sadly, educational institutions are rapidly becoming battlegrounds, experts warn. Counting theusta last year, 19 instances of right-wing aggression were documented within the confines of educational institutions. Eleven of these cases involved brutal physical assaults. In five instances, educators themselves were identified as the perpetrators. This alarmingly underscores the risk of misuse of power and the institutional dimension of xenophobia, the counseling center emphasized.
"The development is concerning," said Sarah Johnson, a member of "Leuchtlinie".
Double the number of so-called queerphobic incidents of violence were registered last year compared to the prior year. "Leuchtlinie" reports 19 episodes of violence targeting individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity in the southwest.
Unprecedented Demand for Support
The clamor for counseling assistance has hit new heights, the counseling center reports. "Leuchtlinie" catalogs cases by examining police reports, news articles, among other sources. The staff also facilitates contact with psychologists or doctors and accompanies victims to their appointments with authorities.
The counseling center, nestled within the Democracy Center Baden-Württemberg and founded in 2016, receives funding from the Ministry of Social Affairs and the federally-funded program "Democracy Lives!". The primary carrier of the program is the Turkish Community in Baden-Württemberg.
