Swastikas roaming the playground, threats, assaults, and abuses - the southwest is witnessing an alarming surge, as per a local counseling center. Last year, they reported a staggering 135 incidents of right-wing, racist, or anti-Semitic violence - a 33% increase from the previous year.
The number of physical injuries has climbed nearly 20%. Racism, sadly, continues to be the leading motive for this violence. Hannah González Volz, a counselor, admits that the actual number is likely much higher since not every incident is reported.
Those affected aren't just the suburbs - educational institutions are rapidly transforming into crime scenes. 19 cases of right-wing aggression were documented last year within the four walls of schools and colleges. In five instances, the perpetrators were none other than teachers or educators. This isn't just a matter of individuals, warn experts, but a concerning power abuse and institutionalized racism.
It gets worse - last year saw a worrisome doubling of so-called queerphobic acts of violence in southwest Germany. The counseling center logged 19 such attacks targeting people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The demand for counseling is sky-rocketing, reports the center. They collate cases by evaluating police reports or newspaper articles, and also assist in connecting victims with psychologists or doctors. Furthermore, they accompany victims to meetings with authorities.
The counseling center, nestled at the Democracy Center Baden-Württemberg and formed in 2016, receives support from the Ministry of Social Affairs and funding from the federal program "Democracy Lives!". The carrier is the Turkish community in Baden-Württemberg.
