The much-anticipated G7 summit in Canada is set to kick off on Monday, with the simmering Israel-Iran conflict looming large on the agenda.

Sir Keir Starmer underscores the significance of the meeting as a platform for allies to vocalize the need for a peaceful resolution in the rapidly evolving Middle East crisis, including the presence of US President Donald Trump.

As global leaders urge calm in the wake of Israel's initial strikes against Iran, Starmer has engaged in strategic discussions with Trump, French president Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, among others.

During a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Kananaskis, Canada on Sunday evening, Boris Johnson called for restraint and de-escalation. The leaders acknowledged the catastrophic human toll and potential economic implications arising from the surge in global oil prices due to the conflict.

On Friday, Johnson expressed concerns over the reports of strikes, urging Israel and Iran to urgently step back and reduce tensions. The conflict escalated further on Monday, with Iran launching missile attacks that claimed at least four lives and left dozens wounded. The ensuing chaos reached Israel's north and central regions, including Tel Aviv, as shrapnel and projectiles rained down.

The Iranian health ministry reported a staggering 224 fatalities since the initial flare-up on Friday, and over 1,277 individuals admitted to hospitals. More than 90% of the casualties were civilians, according to the ministry's spokesman.

Israel's retaliatory strikes claimed the lives of several high-ranking Iranian generals, including intelligence chief General Mohammad Kazemi and two other generals. Tensions further heightened with the UK Government advising against all travel to Israel, and the West's failure to participate in a planned sixth round of discussions regarding Iran's nuclear program.

Rumors abound that Trump recently vetoed an Israeli plan to eliminate Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while Trump expressed a willingness to involve the United States and "get involved" in the conflict. The situation remains fluid, with the specter of additional sanctions on Russia should Vladimir Putin resist calls for an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine looming on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Trump stated in a social media post that both the Israel-Iran and Ukrainian conflicts should end, suggesting dialogue with Putin. Simultaneously, the G7 allies are poised to discuss potential sanctions on Russia as a means of addressing Putin's continued defiance regarding Ukraine.

Given the Middle East's critical role in global energy supply, the G7 acknowledges the potential consequences of the conflict on international energy markets. The broader strategy consists of diplomatic, economic, and security measures aimed at de-escalation, regional stability, and safeguarding market stability.

This approach signifies the G7's readiness to implement measures to mitigate disruptions in oil supply or market panic, ensuring that spikes in global oil prices, a potential consequence of the conflict, do not threaten the global economy.

Politics and general news are intertwined as international leaders gather at the G7 summit, with the escalating Israel-Iran conflict and its potential impact on energy markets being a key focus. Donald Trump and others are strategizing to avert war-and-conflicts and seek a peaceful resolution in the Middle East, acknowledging the significant human toll and economic ramifications of the crisis.
