The Research and Information Centre on Anti-Semitism (RIAS) has reported an jaw-dropping 650 instances, including vicious attacks, menacing threats, and senseless property damage.
In a chilling statement, RIAS project leader Katarzyna Miszkiel-Deppe expressed her concern, "Anti-Semitism is no longer just a distant threat for many Jews in Lower Saxony, it's a brutal, in-your-face reality. They face discrimination on the streets, in schools, online, and even in the very sanctuaries of their faith - synagogues." The surge in incidents can't be dismissed as a fringe issue.
An Unabashed Arson Attack
According to the report, 2024 witnessed three horrific cases of extreme violence, like an arson attack on the synagogue in Oldenburg. A 28-year-old man, mentally unstable, admitted to the crime, claiming to have acted in a state of diminished responsibility. Moreover, 16 brutal physical attacks were registered, with halfconnected to Israel. Following the brutal Hamas terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, anti-Semitic incidents in Lower Saxony exploded.
A total of 215 individuals were directly affected in 2024, compared to 211 in 2023. Inevitably, Israel-related anti-Semitism ranked highest, followed by so-called post-Holocaust anti-Semitism—acts that reject the Holocaust memory, responsibility, and guilt, reminding us of the atrocities inflicted on around six million Jews during the Nazi era (1933-1945).

The research center is funded by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation and backed by the federal government, the state, and the city of Hanover. In addition to criminal offenses, RIAS also records incidents that go unreported due to fear or lack of trust.
Jewish communities in Lower Saxony are urging for intensified action against anti-Semitism. Claire Schaub-Moore, chairwoman of the Jewish community in Oldenburg, expressed deep concern about the increasingly brutal and dangerous nature of anti-Semitic crimes. In November, a campaign against anti-Semitism launched in Lower Saxony. Despite the campaign, Gerhard Wegner, the state commissioner against anti-Semitism and for the protection of Jewish life, admits that anti-Semitism continues to escalate without signs of slowing.
Wegner brought attention to several concerning incidents, such as an openly anti-Semitic rapper performing at a popular concert. Macklemore's performance at the Deichbrand festival in July drew massive criticism due to his alleged propagandizing of anti-Semitic views. The Central Council of Jews even warned against his visit in the Cuxhaven district.
Wegner also noted numerous daily anti-Semitic provocation and bullying in Lower Saxony, perpetrated by Palestinians and their allies. Additionally, there are "too many thoughtless blunders when interacting with Jews."
