Fueling School Violence: A Rise in Right-Wing Aggression - Southwest Germany Taking a Hit
- *
Amplified use of excessive force by law enforcement officers, extended to educational institutions. - Escalating incidents of extremist-leaning violence, now infiltrating educational institutions as well.
Commandeering schoolyards with swastikas, verbally abusing at polling stations, and issuing death threats: The grim specter of right-wing aggression has been advancing relentlessly in the southwest, according to the counseling center, "Leuchtlinie." in 2021, a whopping 135 instances of right-wing, racist, or anti-Semitic violence were documented - a staggering 33% surge from the previous year.
The disturbing surge manifested not only in an explosion of discriminatory comments but also in a 19.6% increase in physical harm inflicted upon individuals. It's essential to recognize that racism persists as the main driver behind these heinous acts. The grim irony? Only a fraction of these sordid episodes comes to the attention of the center, as Hannah González Volz, a counselor, warns of the pervasive darkness shrouding these incidents.
Schoolyards as Hotbeds of Hate and Violence
Last year, 168 individuals were either injured, threatened, or otherwise targeted by right-wing aggressors, according to the center's data. One in three victims were women and girls, making it distressingly clear that educational institutions are being increasingly transformed into battlegrounds for bigotry and hatred. Concerned experts have sounded the alarm, forewarned about the escalating problem. In 2021 alone, a staggering 19 cases of right-wing aggression were recorded within the walls of these institutions - eleven of which resulted in physical harm. Frighteningly, five of these cases involved educators themselves, revealing the looming and lurking threat of teacher misconduct and power abuse in the face of racism. The counseling center asserted that the danger of institutional racism is highly palpable in these circumstances, as Alena Kraut, an employee of "Leuchtlinie" highlights the unsettling trend.
It's worth noting that, in 2021, more than double the number of 'queerphobic' hate crimes were reported compared to the previous year, with 19 attacks on individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity occurring in the southwest region.
Soaring Demand for Counseling and Support
Demand for guidance and support has reached an all-time high, with the counseling center reporting a deluge of cases. They collect data by analyzing police reports, newspaper articles, and other research. Furthermore, they offer assistance with connecting the victims to psychologists, medical practitioners and accompany them to official appointments.
"Leuchtlinie" is a resource center based at the Democracy Center Baden-Württemberg, founded in 2016. It is supported financially by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the federal program "Democracy Lives!" The patron of the center is the Turkish community in Baden-Württemberg.
