Wisconsin Judge Arrested: Trump Administration Takes Aggressive Stance Against Judiciary

In an escalation of tensions between President Donald Trump's administration and the judiciary, federal agents have handcuffed Milwaukee County circuit judge, Hannah Dugan, for allegedly aiding an undocumented migrant to dodge federal enforcers.

FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed the arrest on Friday, stating that the judge face charges for assisting an unauthorized immigrant to skirt federal agents.

The US Department of Justice accused Judge Dugan in a criminal complaint for refusing to surrender the migrant when immigration agents arrived at her court to nab him on April 18. The complaint further alleges that she took measures to help the migrant evade arrest by permitting him to exit through a jury door.

Patel expressed, "Luckily our agents chased down the suspect [undocumented migrant] on foot and he's been in custody since, but the Judge's obstruction created increased danger to the general public."

The Justice Department claims that Judge Dugan exhibited anger when immigration officials appeared to arrest Flores-Ruiz in her courtroom, calling the intervention "ridiculous."

Dugan attended a federal court in Milwaukee to confront the charges of impeding a proceeding and concealing an individual to evade arrest. Records indicate she was released and scheduled to enter a plea on May 15. A group of supporters gathered outside the court, chanting "set the judge free now."

Following the hearing, Dugan exited the court through a side door and left in a black SUV without comment.

Immigration and legal rights advocates assert that subjecting public spaces, such as courts, to immigration enforcement operations may deter undocumented individuals from participating in activities like providing testimony against crimes.

Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on social media, "No one is above the law."

The Trump administration has been engaged in an escalating debate with federal judges as several have issued rulings limiting the administration's use of presidential power in immigration and other matters. The role of state courts has been comparatively insignificant in this dispute.

After sharing his views on social media, Patel deleted the post, which he issued before the case against Dugan was disclosed in federal court. Subsequently, he published another social media post about the case.

"Patel's statement demonstrates that Trump's FBI is more concerned about weaponizing federal law enforcement, meting out punishment without sufficient evidence, and intimidating those who oppose these policies, rather than seeking justice," claimed Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley in a statement.

Trump kicked off a sweeping immigration crackdown after taking office in January, and the Justice Department has instructed federal prosecutors to file criminal charges against local officials who hamper the immigration effort. Such resistance was widespread during Trump's previous term.

According to immigration lawyer Leon Fresco, arresting a judge in these circumstances is "extremely unusual."

"This is only the second time this has happened," Fresco said. "It will now be a matter of conflicting laws. Does the state judge have a point that ICE was hindering the ability of the state judge to hold criminal court hearings? Or does ICE have a point that the state judge was hindering ICE's ability to engage in immigration enforcement?" he added.
