Erik Karlsson's clutch goals lift Penguins past Jets in shootout thriller
The Pittsburgh Penguins secured a hard-earned 5-4 shootout win over the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. Despite a shaky start, the team held firm in regulation before sealing the victory in the tiebreaker. Erik Karlsson played a starring role with two goals and a dominant all-round performance.
The Penguins burst out of the gates early, with Egor Chinakhov and Rickard Rakell both scoring within the first two minutes. But the Jets hit back quickly, pulling a goal back before Cole Koepke levelled the game at 2-2 midway through the second period.
With time running out in regulation, Karlsson stepped up. After a successful coaches' challenge overturned an offside call, he fired in the equaliser with just under eight minutes remaining. His second goal of the night forced overtime, where neither side could break the deadlock. In the shootout, captain Sidney Crosby and Rakell both found the net to clinch the extra point. Teammates later praised Karlsson's two-way play, with Rakell highlighting his impact at both ends of the ice. The win extended Karlsson's red-hot form—since February 20, he leads the entire NHL with 20 points in that span. This season marks Karlsson's third with Pittsburgh, having played 164 games for the club since joining in 2023. Though the Penguins admitted they weren't at their best, their structure in the final minutes of regulation denied the Jets any clear chances to steal the game.
The two points keep Pittsburgh in the playoff hunt, with Karlsson's recent surge proving vital. His 164th game for the Penguins was one of his most influential yet, combining clutch scoring with defensive reliability. The team now turns its focus to carrying this momentum into the next fixture.
