Swiss Author Dies at Age 90 - Erich von Däniken, ‘Ancient Astronauts’ Theorist, Dies at 90

Swiss author Erich von Däniken, known for his controversial theories on ancient astronauts, has died at the age of 90. His daughter, Cornelia von Däniken, confirmed the news, stating he passed away in a hospital in Interlaken due to age-related causes. His work, which sparked global debate, made him one of the most widely read—and criticised—writers of the 20th century.

Born in 1935 in the Swiss canton of Aargau, von Däniken rose to fame in the late 1960s. His career began with articles and lectures exploring the idea that extraterrestrials influenced ancient civilizations. In 1968, he published Chariots of the Gods?, which became a worldwide bestseller and later inspired a film adaptation. The book, originally titled Erinnerungen an die Zukunft in German, argued that advanced technologies in ancient cultures could only be explained by alien intervention.

Over his lifetime, he wrote around 50 books, translated into more than 30 languages. Some of his most notable titles, including Zurück zu den Sternen and Die Götter waren Astronauten, were also turned into films or TV series. Despite his popularity, scientists repeatedly dismissed his theories as pseudoscience, questioning his methods and conclusions. Von Däniken’s ideas remained a cultural touchstone, blending archaeology with speculative fiction. His work attracted millions of readers, ensuring his place as a polarising but enduring figure in fringe history. He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth, and their daughter, Cornelia.

Von Däniken’s death marks the end of an era for fans of his unconventional theories. His books, though often disputed, left a lasting impact on discussions about ancient history and extraterrestrial life. The debate over his legacy is likely to continue, even as his family and readers remember his influence.
