Revamped Report: Grenoble's Mayor, Eric Piolle, Takes Lead of Ecologists after Controversial Elections
Grenoble's charismatic Mayor, Eric Piolle, became the new mouthpiece for the Ecologists party following a tumultuous round of internal voting on April 26th. Competitor Guillaume Hedouin, backed by the national secretary, Marine Tondelier, lagged behind with 2,306 votes, while Piolle clinched a win with 2,607 votes, according to the announcer at the investiture convention that concluded the 2025 party congress.

Young and ambitious, Tondelier, aged 38, secured re-election as the head of the Ecologists on April 19th. Despite urging members to vote for Hedouin earlier, she warmly embraced her opponent, Piolle, whom she managed during his 2021 presidential primary campaign.
"It's awesome, it means we can work together," Piolle shared with AFP, highlighting his rich background in both local and national politics. Confidently, he acknowledged having ventured into "external politics" and expressed his intentions to employ this experience in advancing ecological politics internally.
The Troubled Road to the Top
A total of 16,000 Ecologists party members cast their votes between April 16th and 18th. Tondelier's current leadership won hands down, garnering an impressive 73% of the votes, accounting for a 49% turnout. However, her journey has not been without its turbulence.
Contending against three other candidates, including former MEP Karima Delli and advisors Florentin Letissier and Harmonie Lecerf-Meunier, Tondelier's tenure in office has been clouded by internal strife. Detractors have leveled accusations of a "lack of democracy" within the party, alleging that recent electoral rule modifications favored Tondelier's agenda. Critique has also been directed at her handling of high-profile scandals and the party's disappointing performance in the 2024 European elections, wherein they secured only 5.5% of the vote.
"There's no reason" for these internal conflicts to linger, "since we share a common goal," Piolle estimates, citing the necessity for cooperation on their mutually shared objective. "I believe everyone will adopt a collective spirit," he concluded.
