Terror-Free Türkiye Initiative: A Steps Towards a Peaceful Future

Türkiye is taking significant strides in its ongoing effort to achieve a terror-free future, particularly in addressing the issue of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party). Launched in October 2024, this national initiative aims to permanently end terrorism and make lasting peace a reality.

The process began after the imprisoned PKK leader, Abdullah Öcalan, called for the group's dissolution. This marked the first tangible progress in the initiative, followed by symbolic acts such as 30 PKK members laying down their arms in Iraq.

A parliamentary commission within Türkiye's Grand National Assembly (TBMM) has been established to oversee the process. This commission, led by Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, includes top officials such as Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, Defense Minister Yasar Güler, and National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Director Ibrahim Kalın.

The commission represents the first formal framework for such an attempt to end terrorism and will involve recommendations that may guide Parliament in drafting new laws on the matter. The commission aims to evaluate, legislate, and propose necessary legal reforms, including creating new laws specifically for terrorist group dissolution and amnesty or reintegration of former PKK members.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and parliamentary leaders emphasize that this is not a negotiation with the PKK but a national initiative to secure a terror-free future, stressing strong governmental authority and no concessions to terrorism.

The initiative represents a shift from military confrontation to a political and legal approach aiming at reconciliation and democratization, addressing Kurdish grievances through inclusion and legal reforms. Kurdish political representatives have expressed readiness to contribute constructively to the process, hoping it will advance democracy and peaceful coexistence.

The success of the initiative depends on maintaining public and parliamentary support and how effectively former PKK members can be reintegrated without provoking backlash. The initiative explicitly seeks to balance Türkiye's unity with recognition of its diverse population, emphasizing national solidarity among Turks, Kurds, Arabs, Alevis, and Sunnis.

President Erdoğan has urged the public to trust the state about the process of the terror-free Türkiye initiative. He stated that no step has been taken or will be taken that would torment the souls of martyrs or hurt the families of martyrs and veterans.

In summary, the terror-free Türkiye initiative is an active, government-led effort focusing on dismantling the PKK, passing new laws to prevent terrorism, and integrating Kurds politically and socially to resolve long-standing conflict issues without direct negotiation with the terrorist group. Its success and long-term impact on the Kurdish question and regional peace are still in progress but represent a significant policy shift.

  1. Education play a crucial role in preventing radicalization and fostering peaceful coexistence, which are integral parts of the Türkiye's Terror-Free Türkiye Initiative.
  2. The economy is closely linked to Türkiye's peace efforts, as a stable and terror-free environment could attract foreign investment and boost economic growth.
  3. Defense and security measures will likely be reevaluated in light of the Terror-Free Türkiye Initiative, with an emphasis on preventing terrorism rather than military tactics.
  4. General news outlets and media, in collaboration with crime and justice sectors, will closely monitor the progress and impact of the Terror-Free Türkiye Initiative, ensuring transparency and accountability towards Türkiye's citizens and the international community.
