Equipped Ural motorcycles with Kornet anti-tank systems, Russian troops
In certain battlefield contexts, improvised motorcycle-mounted anti-tank systems, such as those using the Kornet missile, are proving to be a potent force multiplier. These systems offer highly mobile, flexible, and rapid-response firepower, making them particularly effective in asymmetric or hybrid warfare environments.
The Kornet anti-tank missile system's launcher is mounted on a sidecar, providing a mobile setup that can quickly engage targets on the battlefield. This agility is crucial in modern warfare, where armored vehicles are vulnerable to layered attacks in drone-contested environments.
The Kornet ATGM is a sophisticated weapon, boasting powerful anti-armor capabilities. Its tandem warheads are designed to defeat explosive reactive armor, making it effective against modern main battle tanks. These motorcycle-mounted systems are best suited for hit-and-run tactics and ambushes rather than prolonged direct engagements, offering infantry and light units a potent tool for disrupting armored advances or covering retreats.
Examples from current conflicts, such as Ukraine, demonstrate that these improvised light platforms, armed with ATGMs, supplement traditional infantry and armor. They exploit intelligence, surveillance (including drones), and electronic warfare to maximize their impact on the battlefield.
However, these systems have limitations. The lack of heavy armor and protection means operators are vulnerable to counterattacks, artillery, drones, and small arms fire. Effectiveness depends heavily on coordination, reconnaissance, and the ability to rapidly relocate or blend back into terrain to avoid detection. Additionally, limited ammunition capacity and logistic challenges compared to vehicle-mounted ATGM systems must be considered.
Despite these challenges, the improvised motorcycle-mounted Kornet anti-tank systems can be a highly effective force multiplier when integrated into a networked, fast-moving, and electronically contested battlefield environment. Their key value lies in tactical flexibility and surprise rather than sustained armored combat.
Recent operations, such as the one involving a Ural motorcycle and the Kornet anti-tank system, suggest a new tactical approach in military operations. The publication of photos from this operation raises questions about its purpose, with some speculating propaganda motives.
