26th April 2025 Update: Moscow Takes Back Kursk, Ukrainian Forces Sputtering

Moscow's Bonecrusher: The Kremlin's announcement of the recapture of the region of Kursk comes after months of merciless, unrelenting pressure on Ukrainian forces grinding them into the dirt. The Chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, notified President Vladimir Putin that the operation in Kursk had been successfully completed. Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed the "liberation" of Kursk on Interfax.

Ukrainian forces initially infiltrated Kursk last August and managed to occupy dozens of settlements. There was no immediate confirmation from the Ukrainian side. Yet, their troops had been under heavy fire for months, leaving them battered and bruised. "The destruction of the armed formations of the Ukrainian forces within the Kursk region is complete," declared Gerasimov, claiming that Ukraine's plans to create a strategic bridgehead and disrupt Russia's offensive in Donbass were quashed.

A Stinging Setback for Ukraine: For Putin, the invasion of the Kursk region was an embarrassing blow to the Russian state border's integrity. Russia has always insisted on recapturing Kursk as a precondition for entering into peace negotiations with Ukraine. Despite the recent significant withdrawal of Ukrainian troops, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy views the offensive as a success. According to Zelenskyy, the war needed to be moved closer to its source. The critics scoffed at the move, arguing that Ukraine's resources were poorly managed and diverted from other vital fronts.

Taking Over Kursk: At the height of last year's offensive, Ukrainian troops swiftly grabbed approximately 1,250 square kilometers of Russian territory. Nationalist Ukrainian military observers drew maps depicting small remnants of the territory remaining on the border. Russian forces reclaimed the city of Sudzha in March, dealing a severe blow to the position of the remaining Ukrainian forces near the border.

An Uphill Battle for Ukraine: Kiev's hope of trading the occupied territories as part of a peace deal evaporated. Independent Ukrainian military experts calculated that losses sustained during the battle were equally heavy for both sides, with Ukraine suffering even greater losses than Russia, considering the comparative surplus of troops and resources available to the Moscow.
