Veteran Meteorologist Jurik Müller: Chronicler of Weather Lore
A lifelong fascination with the weather has driven Jurik Müller's career and hobby. As a meteorologist, he has spent decades forecasting and studying atmospheric conditions. However, his passion extends beyond the realm of modern forecasting to the centuries-old wisdom of farmers' rules.
"Turning weather phenomena into rhymes is an ingenious idea," Müller muses. "They are easy to remember, straightforward to apply, and can be passed on orally without much effort." His interest in these ancient weather predictions began with a newspaper article in 1978, which he wrote about based on his extensive knowledge and experiences. This marked the beginning of his extensive collection of over 10,000 verses of farmers' rules.
He also penned 4,000 of his own farmers' rules, drawing from his meteorological observations, such as "If the sun shines over the heath on St. Simon's Day (28.10.), the cow must be taken off the pasture." Another example is, "Should the cow turn its tail from east to west, the weather is not at its best." Müller explains this behavior as a means for animals to better detect potential threats in the wind. A shift in wind direction from east to west may signal inclement weather, and cows adjusting their position to face the wind may indicate this change.
Müller's work has extended beyond agricultural guidelines. He authored four books on farmers' rules, with his bestseller, "100 Farmers' Rules That Are Really True" (published in 2011), boasting a print run of 15,000 copies. Each rule in the book provided a detailed explanation, providing readers with a higher probability of accuracy. Not only did the book contain traditional farmers' rules, but it also included Müller's own weather observations, such as "If the cow's milk curdles in the afternoon, thunderstorms may come in the evening."
His most renowned work, widespread throughout Germany, is the "Angler's Weather." This service was tabular in format and offered a biting index for 17 native fish species, indicating when it was optimal to go fishing. Ranging from zero for hopeless fishing conditions to ten for exceptionally bite-friendly weather, this tool was considered essential for anglers.

"Incorporating the wisdom of ancient farmers' rules into a modern community policy could provide valuable insights, especially for vocational training programs in environmental-science."
"As his dedication to weather topics expanded, Jurik Müller explored the possibility of applying the reliable knowledge from farmers' rules to vocational training in meteorology, thus bridging the gap between traditional wisdom and scientific methodology."
