Controversy Surrounds Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Environment Minister Till Backhaus & the Disputed Wolf Slaying

The region'sEnvironment Minister, Till Backhaus, finds himself in hot water over a controversial wolf killing. Backhaus, widely known for his work in conservation, has been accused of abusing his power and contravening hunting laws.

Backhaus, however, stands unfazed. He notes that the wolf in question had repeatedly approached a farm dog and seemed to engage in an unwanted liaison with the canine. The looming fear of wolf-dog hybrids and potential disruption of the delicate wolf population prompted the Rostock district to grant a permit for the shooting.

However, a post-mortem examination disproved the minister's claim that the wolf was with child. On a stormy Wednesday, the legal committee in Schwerin state parliament voted for lifting Backhaus's immunity. The final decision rests with the state parliament.

Rumors swirl that the wolf shooting is under investigation by administrative courts. After the Higher Administrative Court of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern declared the shooting as illegal back in February, both the ministry and the district lodged an appeal with the Federal Administrative Court. It's important to note that the legality of the shooting doesn't automatically validate its legitimacy, according to the Rostock public prosecutor's office.

As for Till Backhaus, he's no stranger to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's political circus, being an active member of the SPD (Social Democratic Party) and chairing the state parliament's committee on the environment and energy.
