Till Backhaus' Wolf Slaying Stirs Controversy in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

In a heated dispute, Till Backhaus, Minister of Agriculture and Environment for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, faces charges of wolf murder. The case has been referred to the Rostock Public Prosecutor's Office, accusing Backhaus of breaking the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

Backhaus' adversaries claim he acted against the law and influenced the unlawful killing of a wild, protected animal. The charges also reach several ministry employees and the Rostock district. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office's spokesperson, the accusations stem from Backhaus' involvement in the wolf's demise.

Backhaus, however, denies the accusations, asserting that the wolf had become a menace, frequently troubling a farm dog and potentially impregnating it. The ensuing risk of wolf hybrids could disrupt the wolf population, he argued. In response, the Rostock District granted a shooting permit.

Aaved by these claims, a ministry spokesperson revealed that the post-mortem examination determined the wolf was not pregnant. In a surprising turn of events, on Wednesday, the Legal Committee of Schwerin state parliament supported the lifting of Backhaus' immunity, who's also a member of the state parliament. The final decision rests with the state parliament.

The controversial wolf shooting is a contentious subject in administrative courts, with the Higher Administrative Court of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ruling it as unlawful in February of this year. Despite this verdict, the ministry and the district have appealed the decision to the Federal Administrative Court. It's critical to note that the criminality of the shooting doesn't hinge on the outcome of this appeal, according to the Rostock Public Prosecutor's Office.
