Gossip mills are buzzing with news about potential legal action against Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Till Backhaus (SPD). He is suspected of illegally shooting a wolf in April 2020, as per reportsby the Rostock Public Prosecutor's Office.

Officials allege that Minister Backhaus violated the Federal Nature Conservation Act, according to a statement from the Public Prosecutor's Office. Besides Backhaus, several employees from the ministry and the Rostock district are also under investigation for their involvement in sanctioning the slaughter of a protected wildlife species.

Backhaus has vehemently denied the accusations, claiming that the wolf posed a threat to a farm dog by reportedly mating with it and creating wolf hybrids, potentially endangering the wolf population. However, a post-mortem examination has refuted his claims, as the wolf was not found to be pregnant.

Parliamentary Confrontation Ahead

The Legal Committee of the Schwerin state parliament has recommended lifting Minister Backhaus's parliamentary immunity, pending a final decision by the state parliament. Simultaneously, the administrative courts are deliberating the legality of the wolf shooting, with the ministry and the district having already filed an appeal against an earlier decision declaring the shooting unlawful by theHigher Administrative Court of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in February this year.
