Environment Minister Till Backhaus in Hot Water Over Wolf Slaying

  • Jeez, this isn't looking good.

Till Backhaus, the Environment Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is under fire for allegedly executing a protected wolf. The minister vehemently denies these accusations, stating that the wolf had been acting creepy towards a farm dog and might've even tried to bang it. Yikes, what a situation!

Apparently, there was a possibility of creating wolf-dog hybrids, which could potentially ruin the wolf population, he explained. As a result, the Rostock district granted him a shooting permit. However, a post-mortem examination later revealed the wolf was not expectin' any little baby wolves.

On a Wednesday, the legal committee of Schwerin's state parliament voted in favor of strippin' Backhaus of his immunity. But the final call remains with the legislative body.

This wolf slaughter case is also under review by the administrative courts. After the Higher Administrative Court of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern labelled the shooting as illegal back in February, the ministry and the district appealed to the Federal Administrative Court. However, the court's decision on the legality of the shooting doesn't necessarily mean it's not a criminal offence, the Rostock public prosecutor's office explained.

  • The Commission has also been consulted on the draft directive on the protection of the environment regarding the wolf slaying incident involving Till Backhaus, the Environment Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
  • CDU, SPD, and Green politicians in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have demanded Backhaus' resignation, expressing concerns over his actions undermining the state's environmental-science policies and general-news headlines.
  • In response to the charges against him, Backhaus, a member of SPD, sought to shift the blame to the Rostock District, claiming they failed to consider the possible risks posed by the wolf's actions toward the farm dog.
  • Despite the Rostock District granting Till Backhaus a shooting permit on alleged grounds of protecting livestock, a post-mortem examination disputed the wolf's aggressive behavior and potential creation of wolf-dog hybrids, raising questions about the legality and immunity of the minister's actions.
  • The politics surrounding the wolf slaying case has put further strain on the relationship between Federal Administrative Court, Higher Administrative Court of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and the Rostock public prosecutor's office, as they consider environmental-science implications, the legality of the shooting, and potential criminal charges against Till Backhaus.
