US Open Mixed Doubles Trial Run Delights New York Audience

Enthusiasts, including competitors, warmly accept the remodeled mixed doubles event at the U.S. Open tennis tournament

The US Open is currently hosting a trial run for its mixed doubles tournament, and it's being met with positive feedback from fans and spectators in New York. This new addition to the U.S. Open's trial run events is a significant departure from tradition, with a condensed format and a star-studded lineup.

The mixed doubles tournament is taking place over just two days during the qualifying week at the main show courts, Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong Stadiums. Unlike previous years, entries are based on singles rankings rather than doubles rankings, which encourages participation from top singles stars.

One such star is Venus Williams, who is playing in her first mixed doubles match since the 1998 U.S. Open. Fans are currently packing the lower bowl of Louis Armstrong Stadium to witness this historic event. Interestingly, Louis Armstrong Stadium is free to enter for the mixed doubles tournament, making it more accessible for spectators.

The revamped mixed doubles event is shorter, with matches being best-of-three sets, but sets are won by the first team to reach four games instead of six. If the set score reaches 4-4, a tiebreak is played. No-ad scoring and a 10-point match tiebreak replace traditional third sets in early rounds to speed up play. All matches are played on the two main stadium courts exclusively.

This new, fan-centric, fast-paced format is a trial run for the US Open's mixed doubles event in 2025. With a $1 million prize pool and a limited draw of 16 teams, the organisers aim to increase fan engagement and visibility. The 2025 edition is conceived as a high-stakes, spectator-friendly showcase, and it seems that it's already living up to that billing.

Mixed doubles at the US Open has historically been overshadowed by singles and traditional doubles competitions, but the 2025 trial run is set to change that. The changes aim to attract top singles players by holding the event early and using singles rankings for entries. Venus Williams' participation in this event reflects the new prestige and appeal of mixed doubles.

While detailed records of Venus Williams' mixed doubles participation at the US Open since 1998 are not included in these results, it is clear she is among the featured stars in the 2025 format's trial run. For tennis enthusiasts, this new mixed doubles tournament at the US Open offers an exciting opportunity to witness top players competing in a fresh and engaging format.
