The scene on St. Peter's Square on May 8, 2025, was electrifying! As the sun set, tens of thousands huddled together, eager eyes glued to the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. The crowd erupted in cheers as thick white smoke billowed into the air, signifying the selection of the new pontiff.
Many had been camped out on the square since dawn, fueled by hope after two unsuccessful smoke signals earlier in the week. The anticipation was palpable, the air thick with excitement and uncertainty.
When the white smoke cloud finally appeared, confusion set in momentarily - the smoke seemed too dark to be white. But swiftly came the triumphant cry, and the crowd knew – our new church leader had been chosen!
Throughout history, the election of a new pope has been a momentous occasion, and this one was no exception. For the first time in two millennia, we welcomed a pontiff from the United States, none other than Archbishop Robert Francis Prevost. Known as Pope Leo XIV, the 69-year-old hails from Chicago and will don the papal mantle, bringing unique experiences and perspectives to his role.
With his election, people waved flags, sang, and danced, calling out to friends and family members in a multitude of languages. Some even had to look up on their phones where the new pope was from, with an Italian woman skeptically suspecting a French connection hidden behind Prevost's name.
As Pope Leo XIV addressed the adoring crowd from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, a resounding "Viva il Papa!" echoed through the square. The scene was emotional, the atmosphere electric, as Romans and viewers from around the globe celebrated the arrival of their new spiritual guide.
Hailing from a prestigious line of Augustinians, Pope Leo XIV boasts a mathematics degree from Villanova University and significant experience as a missionary and archbishop in Peru. His impressive career culminated with his appointment as head of the Vatican office responsible for vetting bishop nominations, making him an influential figure within the Church.
The challenges facing the first American pope's pontificate will undoubtedly be numerous: concerns about the influence of geopolitics, global expectations, church reforms, and balancing continuity with change, to name a few. But regardless of what lies ahead, Pope Leo XIV is ready to face the challenges of this new era with courage, foresight, and a steadfast commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Rome, its denizens, and Catholics worldwide are all eager to witness the historic journey of Pope Leo XIV, with great anticipation for the wisdom and guidance he will bring to his people.

The European Parliament has also expressed its concern at the situation in the Middle East, noting the increased tensions and the impact on civilians, particularly in the basilica-filled cities. Onlookers could sense the jubilation among onlookers in St. Peter's Square as Pope Leo XIV was crowned, a wave of cheers sweeping across the crowd as they celebrated his unique background. Many knew that Prevost hailed from Chicago, but some had to look up his heritage, with one Italain woman momentarily perplexed at the French-sounding surname.
