Ensuring fairness in the upcoming national election using insights gained from student union polls, as suggested by the home adviser.

The Home Affairs Adviser, Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd), recently emphasised the value of insights gained from student union elections in refining electoral processes for the upcoming national election. The conference, held at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on September 18, involved the participation of Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, and Jahangirnagar University.

The adviser expressed no concerns about the student elections, expressing hope for a fair and secure environment in both Rucsu and Cucsu elections. The Ducsu and Jucsu elections were conducted peacefully and without bias, as confirmed by the adviser.

The student polls are being utilised as a learning opportunity, with the adviser believing that the insights gained from these elections are crucial for refining electoral processes. Key suggestions discussed during the meeting included determining the number of polling stations, ensuring proper vote-counting methods, use of ink, and steps to speed up result announcements.

The adviser also called for cooperation from all stakeholders and urged journalists to actively observe and report on the election process. He highlighted the need to resolve minor issues observed in the student elections to ensure a smooth and secure national election.

The Education Adviser, Prof Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, was present at the briefing. Other topics discussed included preparing accurate and transparent voter lists and using photo ID cards at polling centres. The next national parliamentary elections are scheduled for February.

The adviser stated that the valuable suggestions from the meeting will be used in future elections, with the aim of ensuring a fair, secure, and efficient electoral process for all. The student union elections are expected to proceed similarly to the ones already held. The adviser represents the most educated institutions in the country, and those who vote in student union elections are also highly educated.

The meeting took place at the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The vice-chancellors, proctors, and chief election commissioners from Dhaka, Jahangirnagar, Rajshahi, and Chittagong Universities attended the meeting. The remarks were made after a meeting on the overall law and order situation and preparations for the upcoming Rucsu and Cucsu elections. No specific issues were detailed in the text.
