Enlarged Special Investigation Team for Kolkata Gang Rape Case Now Consists of Nine Members

Kolkata's gangrape scandal at South Calcutta Law College has prompted an expansion of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) from five to eight members, as per latest reports. This SIT, under the supervision of ACP Pradip Kumar Ghosal, was formed to thoroughly probe the alleged gangrape incident that occurred on June 25, 2025.

The SIT team includes some fresh faces, with the overall aim to piece together the events of that fateful evening and bring the perpetrators to justice. The alleged offender, a 24-year-old law student, was left traumatized by the attack, which unfolded within the college premises.

The case has sparked outrage and political controversy, with allegations of party dynamics being implicated. Although reports do not explicitly reveal any direct relationship between the accused and Trinamool Congress, the situation has certainly stirred up internal disagreements within the TMC and challenges to its public image[5]. So far, there is no concrete evidence or official statements linking the accused directly to any political affiliation with TMC.

In terms of the investigation, four individuals have been apprehended: prime accused Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, Zaid Ahmed, and the college security guard. The SIT has carried out a crime reconstruction with the victim under videography and analyzed CCTV footage from the college, which spans over seven hours, corroborating the victim's allegations by outlining the accused's movements and the victim being forced into the guard’s room. The evidence allegedly indicates that the incident was premeditated or at least planned to some extent[1].

As the investigation rolls on, the SIT will examine all evidence, including CCTV footage and witness statements, in a bid to uncover the circumstances surrounding the event and any possible pre-planning[1][2].

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has utilized the case to place pressure on the West Bengal government headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP is demanding her resignation, claiming her administration fails in upholding justice and ensuring law and order in the state[5]. This incident has further stoked the political fire, raising questions about the TMC-led government’s ability to address growing public unrest over such incidents.
