Sun-Kissed Skiing well into May - Lift Operators Cheer: Best Season Post-Pandemic
- Enjoying Skiing in May - Optimal Season Post-Pandemic
Savor the spring warmth in the valley, while winter sports fanatics in Bavaria continue to ski through. The season extends at the majestic Zugspitze and Nebelhorn near Oberstdorf until early May. A few days ago, fresh powder snow greeted skiers at the Zugspitzplatt while it drizzled in the valley.
Most areas in Bayern, including Brauneck, Sudelfeld, Spitzingsee, and Großer Arber, have already closed for the season by the end of March. What a shame, they'll miss the Easter holidays this year.
Post-Pandemic Neon Lights
Despite the closure of many areas, lift operators are overjoyed. "In total, it was the best winter for German ski areas since the pandemic," the Association of German Ski Lifts and Cable Cars (VDS) reports. Early snowfalls, prolonged frigid spells, and sunshine have guaranteed good piste conditions in winter sports areas of Germany. Especially during the Christmas and carnival holidays, ski resorts were flooded with visitors.
Compared to last year, more guests were seen at many places, hinting at the enduring demand for winter sports. "We're thrilled with the enthusiasm and are grateful that technical snowmaking allows for snow and booking reliability," says VDS managing director Birgit Priesnitz.
Skiing down to the end of the season
The Bavarian Zugspitzbahn also claims a successful winter. "Unlike last winter, we're immensely satisfied with the snow conditions," says spokesperson Verena Tanzer. In the iconic Garmisch-Classic area, there was at least one ski run down to the end of operations on March 30th, with all higher lifts running without interruption.
The lifts at the Zugspitze are scheduled to run until May 4th. "The snow conditions are fantastic at present," says Tanzer. "Snowfall is always a boon at the Zugspitze." Yet, concerns about the Northern Snowferner, one of the last four remaining glaciers in Germany, persist. The longer the winter snow persists, the longer the glacier stays protected during the summer.
The melting glacier's effects on ski operations
The disappearance of once eternal ice also influences ski operations. The Plattlift could not function all winter for the first time due to the glacier melting. Because the exit of the lift has become too steep for skiers.
The descent has changed dramatically as well. It was once incredibly flat and easy due to the glacier's minimal gradient at the back. The then easy "blue" trail would now be classified as challenging - black - in the upper part.

- Tourism and Economy: The season witnessed a rebound in tourism following the COVID-19 pandemic, with resorts like Arber and Garmisch-Partenkirchen among those expecting increased visitor numbers.
Zugspitze Ski Resort
- Ski Season: The ski season at Zugspitze started on November 29th and will run until May 4th, 2025, benefiting from the Zugspitze's location in the Bavarian Alps and the resulting snow-sure conditions.
- Terrain and Facilities: Zugspitze is known for its beginner-friendly glacier slopes, while lacking challenges for advanced skiers. However, the resort offers stunning views and a state-of-the-art lift system.
- Tourism Impact: The strong snow conditions and scenic views have likely contributed to an increase in tourist visits, aiding local businesses to recover from pandemic-related downturns.
VDS (German Ski Lift Association) Impacts
- Infrastructure and Services: The VDS would have played a crucial role in maintaining and improving ski infrastructure during the 2024/2025 season, with resorts like Zugspitze benefiting from efficient lift systems and possible new investments to enhance the skiing experience.
- Safety and Sustainability: The VDS may have focused on safety measures and sustainable practices, ensuring that ski operations remain environmentally conscious while adhering to high safety standards for the skiers.
- Despite the melting glacier's effects on ski operations, the Commission has also been consulted on a draft directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly at the Zugspitze ski resort, given the potential impact of glacier maintenance and radiation sources associated with ski lift cabins.
- Winter sports in Bavaria are not solely limited to skiing; they extend into the early months of the year, with Birgit, the managing director of the Association of German Ski Lifts and Cable Cars (VDS), emphasizing the importance of technical snowmaking for snow and booking reliability, ensuring snowfall does not hamper the tourism and economy of Bavaria, particularly during the Christmas and carnival holidays.
- As winter sports enthusiasts flock to ski areas like Oberstdorf, where the snowfall has been particularly abundant, the Zugspitze Ski Resort looks to the future, planning for the 2024/2025 season with hopes of maintaining the excellent snow conditions that have marked its success in previous years, drawing in both local and international tourists to enjoy its beginner-friendly glacier slopes and stunning views.
