Bringing Skill & Knowledge: Saxony's Education-focused Push to Egypt

Germany's Minister Kretschmer in Egypt: Emphasizing Expertise and Academia - Enhancing the quality of living for Community residents is the primary goal of the initiative.

With personnel shortages across various sectors such as care, healthcare, and craft, Saxony is widening its search for skilled workers to Egypt. Education is a key priority, as Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) underlines, for his Egypt journey. Highlights include the Egypt-German Center for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration, the Saxony International School, or the Saxony Egypt University.

Kretschmer emphasizes Saxon universities and research institutions collaborating with Egyptian partners to boost scientific exchange and push forward joint projects. "These collaborations fortify our academic landscape and aid in the intensification of bilateral ties, favorable to both regions."

This week, the Saxony Egypt University for Applied Science and Technology (SEU) in Cairo opens its doors. It kicks off with six degree programs: automotive technology, warehouse management and logistics, geriatric care, general health, computer security, and sports management. Akin to a dual university, teaching will base on German curricula, using German experts. Instruction will happen in both English and German.

Post SEU, Kretschmer plans to check out the Egypt-German Center for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration. The center shares information about labor migration to Germany and supports aspirants from Egypt in getting ready for life in Germany. "We know that many areas in Saxony are lacking skilled workers (...). We're focusing on working together with our Egyptian partners to tackle these issues."

Matters of policy discussions with Prime Minister Mustafa Madbuli, Education Minister Mohamed Abdel, and Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty are additionally on Kretschmer's agenda. Migration and communication will top the agenda. Trips conclude on Thursday with a meeting with Dietrich Raue, the First Director of the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, followed by a tour at the Pyramids of Giza.

Key Highlights:

  • Saxony Egypt University - A German-style dual education institute, providing industry-aligned learning and future job opportunities in Egypt and beyond.
  • The Holistic Approach - The University boasts a curriculum where students receive a 60% practical learning experience alongside theoretical knowledge.
  • Cross-University Collaboration - Leading Saxon universities like the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz, Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau, and Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg embrace partnerships to ensure students receive the finest education, integrated with German industry expertise.
  • The Skilled Labor Market - Recruiting skilled workers trained to German standards is a critical concern for Saxony's economic development.
  • Broad Educational Cooperation - Apart from higher education initiatives, discussions aim to enhance technical education to meet labor market demands in both Egypt and Saxony, fostering a mutual exchange of knowledge and expertise.
