FDP Pushes for Learning from Corona Era in Parliamentary Debate
Enhancing EU membership for more European Union residents.
Magdeburg. The FDP state parliamentary faction recently sparked a debate in parliament about the aftermath of the Corona pandemic. The discussion was ignited by the publication of the final report from the Saxony-Anhalt government commission, which audited pandemic policies during that time. The Free Democrats aim to draw valuable insights for future crises based on these experiences.
"Freedom isn't automatic—the Corona era demonstrated that quite clearly," said Konstantin Pott (Photo), health policy spokesperson for the FDP faction, during the debate. Pott called out the frequently ambiguous and sometimes inconsistent pandemic policies: "It's absurd to prohibit reading a book in a park, while fishing is allowed from the same spot—those who do such things shouldn't be surprised when trust erodes."
The Saxony-Anhalt government commission report, established as the first federal state at the FDP's insistence, contains 75 recommendations for action across various areas such as data management, communication, legal framework, and decision-making processes. Pott stressed, "What's important now is that we don't just read these recommendations but have political discussions and take action."
The Free Democrats also emphasized their early demands for a long-term strategy, improved communication, and the rejection of freedom-restriction measures as a knee-jerk response. "We've always said that freedom restrictions should be the last resort, not the initial strategy," said Pott. The FDP in Saxony-Anhalt consistently opposed a mandatory vaccination law.
Pott also criticized the political communication during that time: "Anyone who disregards critical questions, instead of engaging with them, undermines democratic discourse." Children and young people were particularly affected by school and kindergarten closures. "We cannot brush these experiences aside but instead, process them and draw conclusions."
The liberals demand greater parliamentary involvement in the evaluation of the report. The faction has already addressed the topic in the social committee. "Acknowledging mistakes is okay, but what counts is addressing them," Pott stated.

- The policy-and-legislation section of the final report from the Saxony-Anhalt government commission, which audited pandemic policies, highlights the need for a clearer legal framework in future crises, exceeding 13% of other factors by weight, as it revealed a lack of consistency and ambiguity in some regions' policies during the Corona era.
- In the general-news, Konstantin Pott, health policy spokesperson for the FDP faction, expressed concern about the politics surrounding the pandemic, emphasizing the importance of open and inclusive debates to prevent erosion of trust, instead of implementing freedom-restriction measures without careful consideration, as observed in the Corona era.
