Saxony needs to step things up when it comes to civil defense. According to Senior Minister of the Interior, Armin Schuster, the state has been lagging behind the times in terms of civil and disaster protection. He pointed out that the federal government has failed to properly address certain areas such as warning infrastructure, population supply, national reserves, and drone defense.
The new federal government, as highlighted in the coalition agreement, has finally recognized the importance of civil defense. Armin Schuster served as President of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance from 2020 to 2022 before taking up the role as Saxony's interior minister.
No Public Shelters in Saxony
Right now, there aren't any public shelters available in Saxony, which is concerning to say the least. According to the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, the eastern German shelters that were around after reunification were never integrated into the shelter concept.
The states need approximately ten billion euros from the federal government over the next ten years for civil defense updates. This funding aims to adapt the legal foundations, swiftly implement the federal equipment concept, and develop care capacities promptly.
Hospitals in Saxony Stay Prepared
On the positive side, hospitals in the Free State are well-prepared for disaster scenarios involving mass casualties. They are required to draw up alarm and deployment plans, regularly update them, and coordinate with the responsible fire protection, rescue service, and disaster protection authority, along with the integrated regional control center.
Leipzig's St. Georg Clinic is one such hospital that's always ready to respond when needed. "We conduct regular exercises with other Leipzig clinics and the rescue service to test and optimize processes," said Manuela Powollik, spokesperson for the St. Georg Clinic. The clinic also keeps the authorities informed about its capacities and technical equipment.
In a disaster, an alarm and deployment plan would be set in motion within a few minutes. The clinic has all the essential medical departments available around the clock, including the emergency room, radiology, OR, catheterization laboratory, laboratory, and intensive care unit. There's also a "trauma center" where various departments pertinent to emergency care are gathered, such as trauma surgery, plastic surgery, severe burn center, intensive care medicine, and pediatric surgery.
