Zelensky's Surprise Visit to Berlin: High Security Measures in Place

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently in Berlin for an unannounced state visit, and the city is buzzing with high security measures to ensure the safety of the key state guest.

The visit, which came with short notice for the German police, has increased the complexity and risk of the security operation. To manage this, German authorities have implemented strict and extensive security measures across Berlin.

Police forces have deployed a large presence, with officers on patrol in various locations, including motorized boats on the Spree River and positioning snipers on rooftops, notably on the building hosting Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The visit is categorized as a worst-case scenario by police leadership, given the high-profile nature of Zelensky and the geopolitical tensions involved.

The necessity of strong security measures is rooted in the geopolitical context, as Zelensky represents Ukraine in a highly volatile situation with Russia, which poses potential security threats during international appearances and meetings in European capitals. To prevent leaks or potential threats pre-emptively, the German authorities chose to inform the police only at the last moment.

Snipers and other tactical units are strategically positioned to protect key locations and vantage points around the Chancellor’s office during the joint video meeting of European, U.S., and Ukrainian leaders. The parliamentary and government district will have short-term closures for vehicles and pedestrians.

Police boats and officers on jet skis are patrolling the Spree for the visit. S-Bahn and U-Bahn traffic may have short-term disruptions and delays due to the visit. The U-Bahn station Bundestag remains closed, and the U5 line is passing through without stopping. There may also be closures and traffic disruptions around Berlin's capital airport BER due to the visit.

Zelensky is subject to the highest security level, as are heads of government from the USA, Russia, and Israel. A pro-Palestinian protest camp in the government district was relocated for the duration of the state visit. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is expected to arrive in Berlin around noon.

Stephan Weh, chairman of the police union GdP in Berlin, stated that the police are facing a major challenge due to the short notice and high threat level of the state guest. Despite the challenges, the police are working tirelessly to ensure a safe and successful visit.
