Increased Security and New Exhibits at the NS Documentation Center in Munich - Enhanced security measures and additional amenities implemented at NS-Docentrum München

Hey there! Let's discuss the latest changes at the NS Documentation Center in Munich, shall we?

After a series of unfortunate events, the museum has rolled out some exciting renovation updates aimed at beefing up security and enhancing visitor experience. The house has been closed for almost five months and is now ready to reopen with a bang!

Following a terrorist attack in September, where the museum was indeed targeted, the center will now feature a new entrance, advanced video surveillance, and protective bollards outside the building. Director Mirjam Zadoff shared the news, along with the unveiling of numerous new features.

One of the most notable additions to the center is the long-awaited café with a bookshop on the ground floor, designed to create a more engaging atmosphere for visitors. The museum's renovated entrance area will also boast a variety of seating areas, perfect for casual discussions or simply unwinding. Additionally, a riveting video installation will connect current events to the museum's exhibitions.

The installation will shed light on eight locations in Munich where residents have been victims of right-wing extremist, racist, or anti-Semitic attacks between 1970 and 2016. This serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing fight against hate speech and extremism.

As part of the special exhibition "Memory is..." the center will display 22 historical objects in its permanent exhibition for the first time. Each station in the exhibition allows visitors to hear the stories behind these significant artifacts. Items range from Nazi party badges and orders, a puppet from Munich's Jewish Artists Marionette Theater, and even an enamel tin from a concentration camp subcamp.

One object that stands out among the rest is the embroidery of resistance fighter Lies Bueninck from the Netherlands. The USS Liberty survivor managed to hide a Jewish family in Rotterdam before being imprisoned for her actions. In the Dachau concentration camp subcamp, she found a way to embroider a piece of cloth with flowers and her daughter's name, Joke, using a needle and thread she'd managed to get her hands on. The museum shares the incredible story behind this powerful piece of resistance art.

Behind the Scenes of the Attack

In a shocking incident on September 5, 2024, an 18-year-old Austrian opened fire on the Israeli consulate and a nearby NS Documentation Center. Police engaged the assailant, resulting in his death. After further investigation, the authorities classified the incident as a terrorist attack against Israel. The attacker's erratic fire at other buildings was due to "orientation difficulties," according to reports.
