The violence that erupted before the start of a "Colorful Bad Freienwalde" protest left at least two participants injured and has cast a shadow over the town's spirit of diversity. Per the police, the attackers, who were masked and armed with sticks or wooden planks, targeted individuals from the queer community and protesters standing up against far-right extremism.

Local leaders reacted swiftly, with SPB parliamentary head Björn Lüttmann expressing concern over the escalation in violence. "This level of violence is unacceptable, and we must reconsider our approach to protecting such events," he said. Meanwhile, CDU parliamentary leader Jan Redmann stressed the state’s responsibility to safeguard events promoting diversity, tolerance, and democracy, stating, "We need to strengthen our protection measures to ensure no one feels intimidated from attending these events."

The incident has heightened concerns about the safety of such protests, particularly those calling out far-right extremism. In light of this, the state authorities have expressed a keen interest in reassessing and fortifying protective measures to better safeguard these events.

Notably, the AfD, a right-wing political party, strongly denounced the use of violence in any form. AfD parliamentary group leader, Hans-Christoph Berndt, condemned the attack, stating, "Whoever perpetrates a crime must be held accountable, irrespective of their political motivations."

Nonetheless, concerns persist, as the Brandenburg's Constitutional Protection Agency previously classified the AfD state association as a "confirmed right-wing extremist tendency." While the agency's classification remains under legal review, authorities are conscious of the potential threats posed by such groups and are keen to ensure the safety of those standing up for diversity and democracy.

Moving forward, officials are expected to announce new protective measures specifically designed to safeguard protests targeted by extreme right-wing groups, as well asamp up existing security arrangements to better prepare for and respond to potential violent incidents.

  • The community and employment policies should be reviewed and enhanced to ensure the safety of diverse protesters, including those from the queer community, in light of the escalating violence at events promoting tolerance and democracy.
  • As the safety of protesters advocating for diversity and democracy remains a pressing concern, it is crucial for state authorities to reassess security measures specifically targeting events that attract extreme right-wing groups and to fortify general safety protocols for all political rallies, particularly in the context of war-and-conflicts, politics, general-news, and crime-and-justice.
