Enhanced recreational facilities at Waikoloa Park, featuring upgraded sports fields for increased player enjoyment.
Get ready, Waikoloa! The long-awaited Kamakoa Nui Park is coming back, better than ever! The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting a grand reopening on Sunday, May 4, 2025, starting at 10 a.m.
The day is packed with fun activities for the whole family. Kick things off with a traditional Hawaiian blessing, then join in some friendly flag-football games, face-painting, giveaways, and refreshments until around 1 p.m. Two Gold Coast Little League softball games are lined up for noon and 2 p.m., followed by food trucks hanging around until 3 p.m.
Melissa Samura, the Parks and Rec Deputy Director, shared her excitement for the event. "Recreational activities offer more than just exercise - they play a vital role in building character, developing stronger social skills, enhancing academic performance, and strengthening an individual's ability to overcome adversity," she said.
The sports fields at Kamakoa Nui Park have been closed since 2017 due to irrigation troubles that led to grass loss, along with incidents of vandalism involving cars on the field. But don't worry, a fence installed before the pandemic has helped control those issues. And the park's onsite skatepark has retained its popularity, with local skateboarders ready to help beginners and advanced riders during the celebration.
The park, situated at the corner of Kamakoa Drive and Paniolo Avenue, is about to become a hub for the growing community, with several new housing developments nearby, like the Nana Kai subdivision and Na Hale Makoa community.
Interested in reserving the fields for events after the reopening? Just reach out to the Waikoloa Recreation Office at (808) 883-6100. Aloha and see you there!
