Fortified Boundaries: North Rhine-Westphalia beefs up police presence at German borders

Enhanced border surveillance by NRW's Federal Police. - Enhanced border surveillance activities reported by regional authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) federal police.

Listen up, folks! The Feds in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have upped their game big time at the German-Dutch and German-Belgian borders, according to a recent spokesperson announcement. "We've beefed up the number of Federal Police officers patrolling these borders," they said, all thanks to direct orders from the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Alexander Dobrindt, the new Interior Minister from the CSU, announced tighter controls due to the growing immigration issue, allowing for asylum seekers to be turned away if they've already applied in other EU countries — except for the vulnerable ones like pregnant women, kids, and other at-risk groups.

Reul's Reassurance: Support on standby

Later in the day, NRW's Interior Minister, Herbert Reul (CDU), via the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf, pointed out that it's all hands on deck. "We gotta stick together now," he said, branding border controls as a crucial step towards ironing out immigration chaos. His statement invites the border police departments to lend a helping hand if needed.

In preparation for the new directive, the State Office for Central Police Affairs briefed the border police departments in NRW about the updated internal border control procedures.

The Task Ahead: A massive endeavor

Last September, NRW ordered corresponding measures to aid Federal Police internal border controls in the fight against human trafficking and unlawful immigration. This support structure remains active, with border police departments and those in Düsseldorf and Cologne joining the fray.

Controls take place in a border zone spanning 30 kilometers

Initial findings from news agency dpa at the German-Dutch border and WDR at the German-Belgian one suggests that there's been no immediate sign of intensified controls at night. The Federal Police spokesperson explains that checks are discrete, taking place within a 30-kilometer border zone. So if you don't see us, that's a win-win — they're out of sight, and so are the ones they're scrutinizing!
